Project #3: Do your homework

"Spend time in a good bookstore or library and look through the work of some of the great photographers from different photographic traditions. Awareness of the work of others is a huge importance to your own personal development and you should make this a regular part of your life. It's important to not only look at their photographs but also consider carefully what each photographer has to say about their work and the photographic process. Choose favorite photographs from each book and try to assess why you like them, what the strength of each picture might be, and how the photographer achieved the end result."
I'm not sure when Easterby wrote this book, but I seldom go to libraries and borrow books anymore. With the help of the world wide web, I often do research online and buy my books electronically. In addition to the obvious, I am currently reading Pixel Surgeons by Martin Dawber, a principal lecturer in the Department of Fashion and Textile Design at Liverpool John Moores University. It is an excellent read on 30 of the most exceptional practitioners of photography and digital manipulation of the human body around the world. Each photographer's section not only showcases their talent, but unique stories that give life to their fascinating art form.

Some of the featured photographers in the book include:
Renowned Australian photographer, Erik Williamson | http://www.erik.com.au
Fantasy-fueled American photographer, Kate Turning | http://www.turningpix.com
Spain-based photographer, Samoamax | http://samoamax.com

Most recently, I have come across amazing photographers around the world with the help of social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ who are nice enough to critique some of my work. I won't be able to mention all of them, but here is a quick list:

Street Photography | Eric Spiegel
Creative Media | Mikael Sh
Architecture | Hillary Fox
Photomanipulation | Attila Acs

Wedding Portraits | Ryan Brenizer
Photojournalism | Jonah Kessel

Books are great but let's face it, we are roaming with a new breed of information-empowered consumers. The internet is faster and far more utilized nowadays. I cannot stress enough how important social media is to anybody who wishes to expand their network may it be photography or not. Every day is a new day. There is a lot to learn out there for free! And most importantly, be open for constructive criticism. Ask for it. Warning: They are not as friendly as you think. Take it and learn from it. Improve as you go.

So, what are you waiting for? Get to clicking and read away!
